Kind of looks like a parking ramp, doesn’t it? How they are solving the lack of cemetery space in Israel. This is in Yarkon Cemetery outside of Tel Aviv. Photo courtesy of the Associated Press.
If you run out of horizontal space, go vertical. That’s what they’re doing in Israeli cemeteries, according to this story in the Daily Mail.
Jesus was buried in a tomb. Rabbis in Israel say these high-rise cemeteries mimic that ancient practice of burying people inside caves/catacombs. Each level has a pipe filled with dirt so it is still connected to the ground, in accordance with Jewish custom.
You can also find vertical cemeteries in Brazil, China, and Japan. Is the U.S. not far behind?
How interesting! I’ve always wondered that!
It would be so cool to see it in person!
