Don sits in his car, watching a train pass by. He has just left a house full of guests and no one knows where he is.
Season 1, Episode 3: “Marriage of Figaro”
As evidenced by the title, this episode is about marriage. Betty and Don host a birthday party for their daughter and invite the neighbors. We see how different couples interact with each other. We see couples clearly in love, and we see others who are having troubles. We see married men flirt with the new divorcee in town. The couples want to display outward perfection, but something is bound to crack.
Prompt:
What types of relationships do your characters have? Are they married? Single? Divorced? How do others see that relationship vs. the truth of the relationship? Betty’s friends think Don is the best and they tell her how lucky she is to have such a man in her life. But if they only knew! Human relationships are difficult. What actions can your character take that lets readers in on his/her true feelings? Think of Don at the end of the episode: he simply leaves the birthday party and doesn’t return home for hours. During that time he’s drinking and contemplating his life. He feels stuck and like he’s living a lie. Is there a similar “crisis” moment your character can have? Or a series of “crisis” moments?
