What did you enjoy doing when you were a little kid?

I loved playing school. It helped that my sister is nine years older than me, so she’d get off the bus and teach me the lessons she had learned that day. I knew the German alphabet forwards and backwards before I went to kindergarten. We had a big dry-erase board in our shared bedroom, and Mom and Dad had bought me a legit school desk at a garage sale, complete with the top that lifted so I could stash pencils and paper inside.

No surprise — I loved school as a kid, all through K-12. I loved it so much I kept going — bachelor’s, master’s, doctorate. I work at a university, so I get to go to school every day. How lucky am I?

I was reading the Artist of the Year story in the Dec. 30 edition of the StarTribune and was struck at how Sarah Rasmussen seemed to be inclined toward theater since birth.

“Rasmussen and her crew — including youngest brother Carl — converted library books into plays for the dining room, but later requested scripts from catalogs and Children’s Theatre Company, which sent her a bunch and said she could use them for free.”

I’ve always thought that if you’ve lost your path or have questions on what you should be doing, look to childhood. What did you absolutely love?
