I’ve been working using the Pomodoro method. I sit at my computer for 25 minutes, then I get up and move around for 5 minutes. I try to adhere to the time. Even if I’m in the middle of something, I break after 25 minutes. I actually like this, because even if I’m on a roll, I find that a little break gives me some new ideas.

For those 5 minutes, I might do a couple of little things around the house, like put clothes in the wash. I generally like to walk around. I can really see my activity go down when I work at home vs. working at the office. At the office I’m getting up to go to the bathroom, get a drink of water, walk to a meeting, etc. It’s not too hard to meet my step goal at the office. But at home it’s so easy to sit for long stretches, and even when I get up to use the bathroom, it’s literally like 10 steps away.

Lately, though, I’ve put on a song and danced. It’s perfect! Songs are usually just 3-4 minutes long, fitting nicely into that break. I’m moving and stepping and getting my heart rate up. I even earn some exercise minutes! It also brightens my mood. You can’t help but to feel good when a song with a good beat comes on.

I’ve always like disco music for it’s danceable qualities. What’s your favorite music to move to?

I bet these dancers met their exercise goals.
