The National Museum of the Marine Corps is expanding, and this log book from the mortuary at Fallujah will be on display.
Marines brought dead insurgents and civilians into the mortuary. Cheryl Ites, Marine Corps Chief Warrant Officer, kept this record of the dead for six weeks in 2004. She drew lines with a ruler and recorded name (if known), time and date.
From the Washington Post story: “Some of those with her wondered why they were going to such hazardous lengths to recover enemy dead. Why not just leave them? ‘I said, Would you want that to happen to ours?’ [Ites] said.”
Her entire account of the time in Fallujah is fascinating. I encourage you to read it.
