I was talking about these the other day. They are from the Childhood of Famous Americans series by the Bobbs-Merrill Co. My school library at Hartley Elementary in Waseca, Minnesota, had several of them, maybe 2-3 dozen. I know I read them all. I’m sure that was a major factor in why I’ve always loved biographies and memoirs. I love getting a peek inside someone else’s life. And imagine that — I got a Ph.D. in creative writing, and my dissertation was about biography 🙂 As tough as that dissertation was to write and edit, I cherished the excuse to read about the scholarship of biography and conduct original research into the genre.
